Juvenile Justice

Overview

Humboldt County’s juvenile justice system rests on the belief that every young person deserves the chance to learn, grow, and return home stronger. We prioritize rehabilitation and restorative practices over confinement—protecting public safety while equipping youth with the skills, supports, and community connections they need to succeed.

Our Core Strategies

  • Rehabilitation & Restorative Practices – Evidence-based assessments (PACT, EPICS) guide individualized case plans. – Programs like PAIRR diversion and Multi-Dimensional Family Therapy tackle root causes, not just behaviors.
  • Privacy & Record Sealing – Juvenile filings remain confidential; eligible youth can petition to seal records once they complete program milestones.
  • Trauma-Informed, Family-Centered Care – Screening for Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), plus wrap-around family counseling and Parent Project classes.
  • Community Engagement & Equity – MAJJCC coordinates Probation, Behavioral Health, schools, tribal partners, and youth advocates to spot service gaps and innovate. – Efforts to reduce disproportionate minority contact, plus bilingual outreach for Latino and LGBTQ+ youth.
  • Continuum of Care & Re-Entry Supports – Transitional housing, mentorship, vocational training, and independent-living coaching keep young people on track after case closure.

By laying out clear metrics, naming the tools we use, and mapping each youth’s path from first contact through re-entry, our system ensures no one slips through the cracks—and that every young person in Humboldt has a real shot at a brighter future.
