Humboldt County Public Works Roads Division is hiring for a Road Maintenance Worker III/Transportation position.
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, operates and maintains a variety of complex motorized construction equipment used in the construction, repair and maintenance of roads; may act as crew leader as assigned; performs related work as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a skilled-level class in the operation of heavy construction equipment and crusher operations. It is distinguished from Senior Road Maintenance Worker which has on-going lead responsibility for a work crew.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

- Drives construction equipment to and from job sites; loads and unloads equipment from trucks; operates a variety of construction equipment including gradalls, graders, transporters, dozers, rock crushers, front-end loaders, motor rollers, pavers and related equipment.
- Sets up, operates, maintains and disassembles crusher equipment; monitors crusher operations; performs specialized crusher repair and maintenance work.
- Inspects equipment, performs preventive maintenance and reports needed repairs.
- Excavates, backfills, grades and rolls construction and repair sites.
- Loads materials and supplies.
- Operates equipment used in road maintenance and construction, earth moving and grading; cuts to grade.
- Checks job sites for potential hazards; reads blueprints, plans and cut sheets; determines precautions necessary for safe operations.
- Performs manual tasks such as constructing fences and guardrails, spreading gravel and sand and/or various other support functions for the road crews; performs manual labor duties in the construction, maintenance and repair of roads and their appurtenances.
- May direct placement of necessary safety and traffic control devices; observes safety precautions related to the work.
- Makes operating adjustments and minor repairs to equipment such as changing buckets and teeth and tightening loose bolts and hydraulic couplings.
- Secures equipment upon completion of work.
- Prepares a variety of basic records and reports.
- Operates a variety of hand and power tools related to the work.
- May direct the work of a crew on a relief basis.
- Responds to emergency calls in off-hours as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:

- Operation, work methods and limitations of heavy construction equipment used in road repair maintenance and construction.
- Safe work practices and safety regulations pertaining to the operation and transportation of the equipment.
- Preventive maintenance and minor repair methods related to the equipment.
- Measurement of elevations and grades.
- Use and maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools related to the work.
- Earth-compacting techniques.
Skill in:

Other Requirements:Must possess a valid California driver's permit and obtain a Class A license within 30 days. Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Must be willing to work out of doors in all weather conditions. Must be willing to work overtime or off-hours shifts in emergency situations. Must be willing to work with exposure to potentially hazardous substances and to traffic.
Desirable Education and Experience:
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills outlined above is two years of journey-level experience in road maintenance work at a level equivalent to the County's class of Road Maintenance Worker II.
RETIREMENT: The County participates in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS), local miscellaneous; 1st tier 2.7% @ 55, 2nd tier 2% @ 55, 3rd tier 2% @62. The County also participates in Social Security.MEDICAL /DENTAL/VISION INSURANCE: The County participates in the CalPERS health insurance program, providing several options for employees; the County pays nearly all of the employee premium and a portion of dependent coverage. The County also provides a dental and vision plan with premium for the employee and family paid in full by the County.
VACATION: Full-time employees earn 12 days per year (one day after one month of employment); three weeks after three years; four weeks after ten years; five weeks after fifteen years; and six weeks after twenty years. Part-time employees earn vacation on a pro-rated basis.
HOLIDAYS: 14 paid days per year (includes 2 personal holidays).
SICK LEAVE: Employees earn 12 days per year (unlimited accumulation).
SPECIAL LEAVES: Leaves of absence with pay for illness or death in the employees' immediate family may be approved.
LIFE INSURANCE: $10,000 in life insurance paid by County with employee option to purchase up to $500,000.
LONGEVITY: 5% salary increase upon completion of 10 consecutive years of County service. Additional 5% salary increase upon completion of 20 consecutive years of County service.
EDUCATION EXPENSES: The County offers an educational reimbursement program for tuition fees and the cost of books (up to a maximum per year) for job related courses.
DEFERRED COMPENSATION: A voluntary employee paid deferred compensation plan is available.
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: County paid counseling services provided for employee and dependents.
