Interlibrary Loans

Interlibrary Loan or ILL is a long-standing tradition of resource sharing between libraries around the world. If the book or article is not available in our collection, an ILL request enables permanent library card holders to borrow items outside of the Humboldt County Library system.

What you can borrow

  • Print books that have been published over a year ago.
  • A copy of an article from a periodical.

What you cannot borrow

  • DVDs, Music CDs, Audiobook CDs
  • Digital media such as eBooks and audiobooks.
  • Microfilms & microfiches.
  • Materials already in our collection.
  • New materials published within the past year. Instead, you may fill out a New Book Suggestion Form.

How much does it cost?

Free. If the only library willing to lend charges a fee, we will check with you before borrowing.

How long does it take to arrive?

Items from other library systems may take from 2 to 6 weeks to arrive. Rare items may take longer. If you want to check the availability of your item in other libraries, you can search WorldCat

How long can it be checked out? Can it be renewed?

Borrowing period and renewal depends on the library that owns the book. At times, an ILL may be for in-library use only. Your due date will be noted in your library account, on the email or mailed letter you will receive when the ILL is ready for pick up, and on the label that comes with your ILL book. Any request for renewal should be made at least 5 days in advance of the due date.

Returning Your ILL

Please return the item in person to staff at the service desk at your nearest branch library. Please do not return Interlibrary Loan items in the book drop.

An article is a scanned copy sent to your email. Return process and due dates do not apply to article requests.

Lost or Damaged ILL

Lost or damaged ILL items will result in a charge to your account based on the fees set by the lending library.

How to request an ILL

  1. You need a permanent Humboldt County Library card. Your account should be in good standing without overdue items and/or fines over $5. Express Cards and eAccounts are not eligible for ILL.
  2. Have the information of the book or article ready such as title, author, publication date, etc.
