On Thursday, August 21, Nick Entsminger, a former Physician Assistant at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility (HCCF), will run 45 miles from the CalFire Station in Bridgeville to HCCF in Eureka. His goal: to raise awareness and funds for the Deputy Wellness Program.
Titled Run for Resilience, the route will take Entsminger through steep, mountainous terrain with an elevation gain of up to 8,000 feet. The run represents the mental and physical demands faced by law enforcement and first responders, and the importance of programs that support their well-being.
“Running 45 miles symbolizes the strength, endurance, and unwavering commitment of our deputies,” said Entsminger. “This run honors their service while raising awareness and support for their safety, mental health, and overall well-being.”
Entsminger has served as a medical provider at HCCF for the past four years and brings decades of experience in emergency medicine, primary care, hospital medicine, and prehospital care. He currently lectures at two graduate universities, serves as a clinical instructor, and has taught in the local paramedic program for over 20 years. A former U.S. Air Force Reserve Captain, Entsminger also provided medical support for a military unit based at Travis Air Force Base.
“These experiences have shown me firsthand the physical and emotional demands placed on frontline professionals, including Sheriff’s deputies,” he added. “That’s why I’m running—to honor their service and advocate for the critical resources they need to stay safe and healthy.”
The Deputy Wellness Program provides vital support services such as mental health counseling, wellness resources, and peer support for deputies.
