Correctional Deputies save choking inmate’s life

Sheriff's Office Posted on March 17, 2021

Two Humboldt County correctional deputies saved an inmate’s life last week after successfully performing the Heimlich Maneuver.

On March 8, 2021, during dinner service in the Humboldt County Correctional Facility, Correctional Deputy Jakob Heckert was working in a male housing unit and noticed an inmate who appeared to be choking. Deputy Heckert called for backup and immediately began administering the Heimlich Maneuver on the choking inmate. Correctional Deputy Jennifer Hudson responded to the call for backup and assisted Deputy Heckert with life-saving efforts. The deputies were able to successfully dislodge the obstruction from the inmate’s airway, saving the inmate’s life.

Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal commends Deputies Heckert and Hudson for their quick actions and proper use of training to save a life.
